Quitting Diet Coke Boosts Heart, Gut Health

Washington: Experts now say quitting Diet Coke may significantly improve heart health and gut balance. While the popular drink contains zero calories and no added sugar, dietitians warn it may pose hidden health risks.

Expert dietitian Michelle Rosenstein told Fox News Digital that drinking two or more artificially sweetened beverages daily has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. She also cited studies suggesting even one daily diet soda could raise the risk of atrial fibrillation (Afib), a heart rhythm disorder that heightens the chances of stroke.

The risks may stem from how the body processes artificial sweeteners, which could disrupt gut bacteria and trigger harmful metabolic effects. Tanya Freirich, another registered dietitian, added that Diet Coke’s sweetener, aspartame, has been associated with weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and potentially even cancer.

Though the World Health Organization labeled aspartame as possibly carcinogenic, the U.S. FDA maintains it is safe when consumed within approved limits.

Social media trends have revived interest in Diet Coke, but many former drinkers say they were unaware of how addictive it could be. Experts suggest low-sugar kombucha, sparkling green tea, or simply carbonated water with lemon or lime as a healthier swap.

For caffeine seekers, lightly sweetened tea or coffee offers antioxidant benefits without the risks tied to artificial sweeteners. Still, dietitians agree that plain water remains the best hydration choice, essential for digestion, skin, and overall energy.
